Adulting, or at least feeling like it

10 June 2014

I wish I could remember the first time I felt like a real adult. It may have been sometime in college — though you’re still sort of in fledgling zone there, wobbling your way through those first stages of independence.

But these are a few things that I’ve noticed, and mentally remarked to myself, that it made me definitely feel like a real adult. As I’m inches from 30, I thought it’d be fun to go through some of these.

» Owning a microwave

» Buying a slipcover for my sofa

» Cooking a meal that does not involve a microwave, and does involve side dishes

» Filing your taxes on your own (because there’s nothing more adult than taxes)

» Taking taxis

» Choosing to stay in and read a book just because you want to

» Realizing that, though yes there is booze-a-plenty, you don’t need it to have fun with your friends

» Going to a fancy-pants restaurant

» Treating your parent(s) out to eat for no special occasion other than because you can

» Treating yourself to something nice, big or small, just because you can

» Not doing or buying something, no matter how much you want it, because you can’t budget it

» And of course, realizing you are turning 30.

What about you? What makes you feel like an adult?

  • “Not doing or buying something, no matter how much you want it, because you can’t budget it” this really makes me feel like an adult. Also, trying to think outside of my bubble, and considering how others feel (so many “adults” I know can’t do this, or worse, they don’t try.
