So, of course Batgirl was one of the first ideas I had for casual cosplaying. I can’t remember what exactly was the initial spark to do casual cosplay this year at C2E2, but I’m glad I caught whatever bug that was. (There’s a chance Mia Moore had something to do with it…)
Anyway. Batgirl. As much as I love her, I’ll admit, I’m really limited in my knowledge of her. And I only have familiarity with Barbara Gordon’s Batgirl, not Cassandra or Stephanie’s. But that’s a topic for another day. It’s the New 52 Batgirl that really caught my eye and told this casual cosplay bug that we needed to do this. Top: Black tank or shirt or whatever you like. Purple cardigan. You could also go yellow or gold too.
Bottoms: Black skinny jeans with a yellow belt.
Shoes: The yellow Keds keep it casual, but I also like the idea of her wearing a hightop sneaker.
Accessories: Bat necklace. If you’re doing a purse, something stylish and black is probably you best bet, unless you find a good yellow one to reflect her belt.
Now, from this, I built my own version that would work well with my own wardrobe. As much as I wanted yellow shoes, I knew for now I should get something I can wear for a few things. So black hightop (wedge) Puma’s. Which were sort of ok, but after 6 hours I traded them in for flip flops (not show room acceptable!)… I also modified my purple hoodie to have bat ears. I did these with felt very quickly.
Here’s how it turned out:
Sorry it’s a little blurry. Couldn’t really hold my hand still. Also, I need to clean my apartment AND get a fully length mirror to help with these. (Or just clean and use my tripod.)
Here’s one of the hoodie though, since you can’t see that in the full body shot.
Over all, I was super comfortable wearing this at C2E2. No one really noticed I was doing casual cosplay — probably because a con is not the best place to make this actually stand out, what with people doing actual cosplay. But I like the outfit and will probably wear it to work — though I’m not sure if I’m keeping the bat ears on the hoodie…
Now I just need to come up with a summer version of this so I can keep being Babs despite the sweltering weather.
