I wish I could remember the first time I felt like a real adult. It may have been sometime in college — though you’re still sort of in fledgling zone there, wobbling your way through those first stages of independence.
But these are a few things that I’ve noticed, and mentally remarked to myself, that it made me definitely feel like a real adult. As I’m inches from 30, I thought it’d be fun to go through some of these.
» Owning a microwave
» Buying a slipcover for my sofa
» Cooking a meal that does not involve a microwave, and does involve side dishes
» Filing your taxes on your own (because there’s nothing more adult than taxes)
» Taking taxis
» Choosing to stay in and read a book just because you want to
» Realizing that, though yes there is booze-a-plenty, you don’t need it to have fun with your friends
» Going to a fancy-pants restaurant
» Treating your parent(s) out to eat for no special occasion other than because you can
» Treating yourself to something nice, big or small, just because you can
» Not doing or buying something, no matter how much you want it, because you can’t budget it
» And of course, realizing you are turning 30.
What about you? What makes you feel like an adult?
